INSPIRATIONAL COMPONENTS

We view our oceans as beautiful, and they are, but each and every day human activities take an increasing toll on their dwindling resources.  We are mesmerized by ocean sunsets, build castles on sandy shores, and enjoy sport fishing in our coastal waters. Yet, what we experience in the beauty of America’s oceans often hides the devastation just below the surface. The need to understand and develop broad reaching changes in our approach to the seas has never been greater.

America’s Ocean Challenge will build greater understanding about our human relationship with the oceans by inspiring the public about the wonders of their marine heritage.

The AOC program will focus on:

• The public’s emotional connection to the ocean

• Their vague sense that oceans are essential to humans

• Oceans as habitats—“circle of life” ecosystems

• Presentation of achievable solutions

The AOC program is based on peer-reviewed science about ecosystems and their function. The program will be presented through multiple channels, including print, radio, internet, audiovisual and educational components, which will function in totality in much the same way as an ecosystem.

Energy efficient household appliances reduce the amount of power needed to heat or cool your home - thereby lowering fossil fuel consumption
Some seafood species such as orange roughy may take 30-40 years to mature and live to be 150. Such slow growing life forms do not reproduce fast, yet they can be consumed in 20 minutes. Fisheries have mined such important members of the ecosystem to commercial extinction.
